What is Global Warming?
Increase in average temperature on Earth’s climate & oceans due to natural greenhouse effect caused by the greenhouse gases is said to be the global warming phenomenon.
From the day human started using fossil fuels, CO2 (Carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere started building up. Being a green house gas, CO2 can trap the warmness from dispersing to the sky. This speciality of CO2 now results in global warming.
The Greenhouse Effect
Greenhouse, the agricultural system used to accelerate plant growth is also the necessary system sustaining life on the planet Earth. Water vapour, the essential component of the atmosphere has the ability to trap heat from getting dispersed. The trapped heat is radiated back to earth and that keeps our planet warm even at nights. Without this effect, our planet would be at 0 degree Celsius in absence of sun light.
What accelerates Greenhouse Effect?
Even though Earth has it own system of greenhouse, it is the human activities that is causing imbalance to the natural greenhouse. Humans use fossil fuels and burn them for everything from food to transportation. The result is increased amount CO2 in atmosphere. Increased CO2 inevitably leads to increased greenhouse effect and more heat is trapped above the earth surface.
Impact of Global Warming
Global warming can affect both plant and animal species. The major impact of the global warming will be decrease in polar ice caps, which results in rise of ocean water level, which in effect brings low lying cities under the sea.
The increase amount of fresh water can also affect the flow of Thermohaline circulation, the ocean current powering our climate. Hence any change to this current can adversely affect the world’s climate. Hurricanes of large magnitudes, floods, droughts and other extreme weather anomalies are the predicted results of global warming.
Global warming also results in ice-albedo feedback. When ice melts, these areas will either become land or ocean. Both land and ocean are less reflective and can absorb large amount of heat. This in turn warms the climate and results in more melting of ice. Thus global warming can increase the effect of global warming.
Why you should know about globalwarming?
It may seem there are many years ahead of us until this catastrophe happens; in reality we are already experiencing weather anomalies all around us. It is obvious that we cannot prevent global warming, but we can minimize the impact. If we do not take action today, it will be the coming generation that will affect most. Hence to minimize the effect, educate as much people around you about global warming. Then only we can prevent the use of fossil fuels and thereby decrease the emission of green house gases.
